21:30/ 14 Nov/ Congress Centre. Condemned to six years in prison, Malik El Djebena cannot read nor write. Arriving at the jail entirely alone, he appears younger and more fragile than the other convicts.
He is 19 years old. Cornered by the leader of the Corsican gang who rules the prison, he is given a number of “missions” to carry out, toughening him up and gaining the gang
leader’s confidence in the process. But Malik is brave and a fast learner, daring to secretly develop his own plans.
Director's Statement
I adore hybridising and the idea of contrasts. I’m not able to remain in a realm of greys, where only grey exists, and this is clear from the writing. This fantastic dimension allows me to take a huge step forward with the character, bringing a fantasy and an interiorizing that wasn’t before possible. It permits to widen the genre, which is never as good as when one begins to meld and transform. It facilitates the story, enriches it, and the form also surges from it. When one writes the story of a ghost, one assumes to represent the guilt within the role, but it isn’t clear if it will work on the screen. When one writes a very tense scene in an automobile and suddenly an animal is run over, we are also not convinced. When it works, the intuition of the writing is confirmed.
