Official Selection - In Competition

Focusing on European cinema and directors, the 2009 Estoril Film Festival will show 12 films in competition. The films were chosen by a selection committee, composed of renowned personalities from the world of cinema, whose criteria were focused on innovation and creativity.

Official Selection - Out of Competition

In Out of Competition, the Festival will present the national premieres of the films of the most renowned filmmakers, and both the directors and actors will be present.

Tribute to David Cronenberg

The acclaimed Director of The Fly, Spider and Crash and the most recent, History of Violence and Eastern Promises, will attend this edition of the Estoril Film Festival. A Tribute to one of the greatest Filmmakers of nowadays, with a display of all his works and the presentation of his two exhibitions: Chromossomes and Red Cars.

Tribute to Juliette Binoche

Juliette Binoche comes to Estoril to present her exhibition Portraits "in-Eyes", an exhibition of paintings, poems, portraits of the actress’s characters, as well as of the directors with whom shehas worked. Estoril Film Festival completes this Tribute by showing some of the films that inspired this exhibition.

Retrospective David Fincher

Author of Films such as Seven, Fight Club and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. David Fincher is a cult name among the modern North American cinema. Estoril Film Festival presents a selection of the videoclips Fincher directed for artists like Madonna, Michael Jackson or Billy Idol.

Rare Filmmakers

This year Estoril Film Festival initiates a section dedicated to filmmakers who created singular pieces of unquestionable quality, free from the pressures of the industry. Victor Erice and Franco Piavoli are the honourees of this year. Franco Piavoli will attend the event and Victor Erice is yet to be confirmed.

CinemArt

Robert Frank, Peter Handke, Bob Dylan, David Byrne and Manfred Eeicher are the names of some of the greatest personalities of the worldwide art scene that, even challenging the limits of their own creativity, did not resist to Cinema’s allure.

Cinema and its History

Estoril Film Festival will screen two essential works to the relation between Cinema and its History – through an homage to the Thomson Foundation and its restoration and conservation work of films such as Lola Montès and through the importance of the Spanish Film Museum that help maintaining fundamental documents to the understanding of the Spanish Civil War.
